Can Sustainability and Biosecurity Go Hand in Hand?

Can Sustainability and Biosecurity Go Hand in Hand?

When people think about reducing plastic waste, they often think of reusable coffee cups, shopping bags or food packaging. Cleaning and biosecurity products don't always feature in the conversation.

Yet across every part of the animal care industry, there are opportunities to reduce plastic waste and reduce our environmental impact, while maintaining the highest standards of hygiene. The key is ensuring that sustainability never comes at the expense of effective infection prevention.

Hygiene Comes First

Whether you're protecting patients in a veterinary practice, helping prevent disease transmission on a farm, maintaining biosecurity in a zoo, or simply keeping your home clean for your pets, hygiene is essential. Effective cleaning and disinfection help reduce the spread of harmful bacteria, viruses and other pathogens, protecting both animals and the people who care for them.

That's why any move towards more sustainable practices must begin with one principle: the products you choose must still do the job they're designed to do. Fortunately, sustainability and performance don't have to be competing priorities.

Sustainability Looks Different at Every Scale

Every organisation has different requirements. A pet owner may only use a few litres of disinfectant each year, while a veterinary hospital, animal rescue centre or livestock enterprise could use hundreds or even thousands. That means there isn't a single solution to reducing plastic waste.

For some, it may be as simple as refilling an existing trigger spray bottle rather than replacing it. For others, it could mean purchasing larger pack sizes or changing the way products are supplied altogether. The important thing is recognising that there are opportunities to reduce unnecessary waste at every scale.

Looking Beyond Single-Use Plastics

Plastic continues to play an important role in safely storing many cleaning and disinfectant products. It's not possible (yet) to remove it completely, but the aim must be to use it more responsibly, until that is possible.

There are several practical ways organisations and animal owners can reduce unnecessary plastic waste:

  • Choose refill options where available instead of replacing trigger bottles each time.
  • Purchase larger pack sizes to reduce the amount of packaging required over the lifetime of the product.
  • Select biodegradable, plastic-free wipes where appropriate.
  • Reuse dispensing bottles safely rather than disposing of them unnecessarily.
  • Review purchasing habits to identify opportunities to reduce packaging without affecting day-to-day operations. These approaches can reduce waste while continuing to support effective hygiene and biosecurity.

Safe4's Environmental Commitment

At Safe4, we believe effective biosecurity and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. We're continually reviewing every part of our business to reduce our environmental footprint while maintaining the high standards of hygiene and disinfection our customers rely on.

Looking Ahead

Environmental sustainability is becoming an increasingly important consideration across every sector, including animal care. Plastic Free July provides an opportunity to review the products we use every day and ask an important question:

Can we reduce unnecessary waste while continuing to maintain the highest standards of hygiene and biosecurity?

For many organisations, the answer is yes. Whether it's choosing refill options, purchasing concentrates, switching to biodegradable wipes or receiving products in bulk, practical changes can help reduce environmental impact without compromising effective cleaning and disinfection.

At Safe4, we're committed to continuing that journey, developing products and solutions that protect animal health while helping our customers reduce their environmental footprint. Because looking after animals also means looking after the environment we all share.
